Italian Medical Society of Great Britain

The Society is composed of Italian speaking medics who live or have lived and worked in Great Britain, and want to maintain an Italian cultural identity.

The main objectives of the Society are: To guide and support Italian colleagues who want to come and work in the UK. To promote knowledge and cultural development To promote academic links among its members To maintain the highest standards of professional competence.

The Italian Medical Society of Great Britain is Italian, but not only: a number of colleagues of British or other nationalities are with us, provided they have family, cultural or linguistic links with Italy.

The Society is Medical, but not only: other life-science graduates, or colleagues working in associated professions, are part of it.

The Society is based in London, but other chapters are being now set up in other parts of Great Britain, in Ireland, in Australia, Canada, and of course in Italy, for those of us who have decided to move on to other countries or to return to Italy

Our priority is to facilitate the professional relocation of Italian doctors into the UK; to support and strengthen their professional status once in the UK; and to facilitate their return to Italy, when appropriate, in order to create an exciting example of cross-fertilising osmosis. We achieve this through links with the Department of Health, the General Medical Council, the British Medical Association, the National Health System, but also with private agencies and websites of professional relocation, both in Italy and the UK. An extremely important link is also with the Facebook page “Gruppo Medici Italiani a Londra” published by one of our members. For all these, see the dedicated pages in the site.

Our cultural activity has often been conducted, especially in the past, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute. Guests have included medics and scientists of international standing, but also journalists, writers and film directors (see dedicated page in the site).

The Italian Medical Society of Great Britain was founded in 1997 by a small group of Italian physicians and surgeons who lived and worked in London: Professor S Aloj, Dr G Abbondati, Professor G Bottazzo, Dr M Impallomeni, Mr U Pastorino and Mr G Querci della Rovere. Of the founding group, Professor Aloj, at the time Scientific Attaché of the Italian Embassy in London, was the first President of the Society (1997-99); Mr Querci della Rovere, recently and sadly passed away, was its second President (2000-2001), and Dr Mario Impallomeni its third president (2002-2003). In 1997, we estimated that there were approximately 300 Italian physicians in the UK; now, in 2014, this number has reached the figure of 3,000 (NHS data).

The support of the Italian Embassy in London, especially through its Scientific Attaché, has been key to the success of the Society. Apart from Professor Aloj, mentioned above, we want to thank his successor, Professor Salvator Roberto Amendolia, for his generous support during many years, and the present Scientific Attaché, Professor Roberto Di Lauro, who has recently begun the coordination of all the Italian professional associations, creating a synergy that will without doubt generate an impulse to the growth of all the single organisations.

Filippo Berio

Filippo Berio is much more than a name on a bottle. In 1867, in the small Italian town of Lucca, Tuscany a young man named Filippo Berio set out to follow his passion for making Olive Oil.  It was here that he learned his craft and began producing his own signature olive oil.

Only when an olive oil had passed Filippo Berio’s expert tasting was it allowed to bear his name. Season by season, Filippo Berio’s fame grew and before long his signature had become a guarantee of exceptional quality.

In the late 1800’s, thousands of Italians emigrated across the world, & Filippo, seeing a golden opportunity; started selling his oil to those wanting to take a taste of home with them on their journey across the Atlantic. Demand grew so high for Filippo’s oil that by the end of the 19th century, it was Italy’s foremost export brand, winning international awards for its exceptional quality.

Escape in Art

The Escape in Art Group is a non-profit cultural association, based on volunteering for anyone who wants to contribute to its activities.

Escape in Art was formed in 1998 in London (History of Escape in Art) by a group of friends led by Pino Ferrara who all shared the passion for theatre and literature, as well as the awareness that the Italian language, stifled by more widespread international languages, could be lost over time.

With this spirit, the Group has undertaken a number of theatrical productions and literary competitions that have received numerous approvals.

Collaboration with the Escape in Art Group is based solely on the volunteers and the passion of participants. Any income from the Group’s activities is entirely devoted to charity and the members of the Group often contribute personally to production costs.

After more than ten years of regular activity, the Group has now suspended both theatrical productions and literary competitions, responding to the professional and personal responsibilities of the volunteers who have allowed it to operate it so far.

However, we hope that the past activities – of which this site is a comprehensive compendium – have left a mark. On the site you will find a chronology of the Group’s initiatives, the works of theatrical works and the reports of the Literary Contests. Also available are videos of almost all stage plays.

The Escape in Art Group is firmly committed to making the proceeds of its work to be used to help less fortunate people. The organization of every theatrical work is based on the utmost economy and is based on the volunteering of its members. Very often scenes and technical equipment are made available by the same members of the Group and their friends. In this way, you can optimize your expenses, and make almost all the proceeds, both from ticket sales and sponsors, to be used for charity.

Since its foundation, the Group has been focusing its attention on the praiseworthy work of D.ssa Giorgina Vergani, primary of the Infantry Hematology Department at King’s College Hospital in London. Being one of the most advanced hospitals in Europe, Italian children often need care in this facility. Although the care of children is fully covered by the National Health Service, parents’ stay is not financially supported. And this is the area of intervention of the Group, which through the VVI (Italian Volunteer Visitors) and D.ssa Vergani, helps the most needy families face their stay in London as peacefully as possible.

San Pietro a Pettine

Italian-born chef Giacomo Marinello brings authentic Italian cooking to Chicago with an emphasis on combining simple ingredients to create incredible flavors.

Marinello received his training working up the ranks at one of the finest Michelin-starred restaurants in London–Locanda Locatelli. It was there Marinello sharpened his culinary skills under the mentorship of the owner and celebrity chef Giorgio Locatelli. It wasn’t long before Marinello was assisting Locatelli with preparing menus for some of the most exclusive private dinners in London. Marinello’s work with Locatelli gained the attention of Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai where he was asked to assist with training the staff for their grand opening.

After moving to Chicago, Marinello began working as a private chef and menu consultant. While working in Chicago kitchens, he realized the quality of certain ingredients to be lacking, particularly the truffles. Marinello founded his own company, Marinello Tartufi, to import the world’s finest truffles and truffle products from the legendary Italian San Pietro a Pettine estate to America. By working directly with this three generations old supplier, Marinello is able to ensure that his customers are receiving the freshest quality products year round. Marinello Tartufi began bringing these truffles to the states for the first time in late summer 2014 and currently sells the truffle products in 19 Chicagoland Mariano’s markets.
