Nebbiolo is a Piedmont red wine grape variety, and its name is derived from the Italian word “nebbia”, which means fog. Nebbiolo produces the DOGC wines of Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara, Ghemme and Roero. All these wines could take years of aging to balance the tannins with the other characteristics, such as the typical aromas and flavors of herbs, tobacco, cherries and more. At its best, a Piedmont Nebbiolo wine is considered top at around a 10-15 year mark. While the production of Nebbiolo wine is less than Barbera, it’s considered to be the greatest wine from Piedmont.
Barbera is a red Italian wine grape variety: it produces the DOCG wine Barbera d’Asti. It is the most planted red grape variety in Piedmont, and the third most-planted red grape variety in Italy. Barbera wines from Piedmont are dark in color and taste of black cherry, anise, and dried herbs.
Barolo is a DOCG Italian red wine from Piedmont, produced in the hills of the Langhe, in the south-west of Alba. The zone of production includes the communes of Barolo, Serralunga d’Alba, Castiglione Folletto and parts of the communes of Diano d’Alba, La Morra, Grinzane Cavour, Monforte d’Alba, Verduno, Roddi and Novello. Barolo is made with the Nebbiolo grapes, and it is considered as one of the greatest Italian wines.
The modern dry version of Barolo has been developed by Paolo Francesco Staglieno, author of the winemaking manual: “Istruzione intorno al miglior metodo di fare e conservare i vini in Piemonte” (1835). The Risorgimento prominent figure Camillo Benso, conte di Cavour, called Staglieno for a position of oenologist at his Grinzane estate in the late 30s of the 19th century. Staglieno produced a great quality wine, tannic and stable, perfect for the export.
Barolo is a full bodied wine with pronounced acidity and tannins. It goes well especially with heavy dishes, like pasta with sauce, risotto, meat and cured meat.

Often compared to Barolo, Barbaresco is produced in the east of Alba, in the territories of Barbaresco, Neive, Treiso and San Rocco Seno d’Elvio. This DOC and DOCG wine is made with the Nebbiolo grape, but there are some differences with Barolo.
Tannins of Barbaresco soften quicker: this means that the wine won’t be able to age as long as Barolo does. This is not necessarily a bad thing, because it makes Barbaresco more easy to drink, especially at an earlier age.
Barbaresco wines must be aged for a minimum of 2 years prior to their release and aged for at least 4 years to be considered a riserva. Typically, Barbaresco has bouquets of violets or roses with flavor notes of truffle, cherry, licorice and fennel.
The name of this Piemonte wine comes from its musk aroma. Produced in the province of Asti, Moscato d’Asti is a DOCG sparkling white wine. This dessert wine is made from the Moscato bianco grape, and it is sweet and low in alcohol.
Cultivated for hundreds of years in the Piedmont DOCG in Italy, Moscato bianco is considered one of the oldest grapes grown in that area. The Ancient Romans called it Apiana, and many documents attest its presence in Piedmont during the Medieval ages.
According to Piemontese tradition, Moscato d’Asti was and is still is appreciated as a digestive, stimulating the palate for dessert.
Dolcetto is a wine made with Dolcetto grapes, and the name literally means “little sweet one”. This Piedmont wine has low acidity, it is dark in color, with flavors of licorice and blackberry. There also exist fruit-forward versions of the wine, characterized by more tannins.
