He was recently on trial for the post of principal clarinet with the Ulster Orchestra and has performed as guest principal with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.
He held the principal clarinet seat with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on their ‘Futures First’ apprenticeship scheme for 2004-05. In 2004 Massimo also held the principal Eb clarinet seat with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and in 2003 was a member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra, collectively working under the batons of Claudio Abbado, James Levine, Ivan Fischer and Yuri Temirkanov to name but a few.
He made his Purcell Room debut in January 2007 as part of the Park Lane Group Series with the Aquilon Trio (violin, clarinet & piano), with whom he has also performed at St James’ Piccadilly and the Crush Room at the Royal Opera House. Solo engagements include Dance Preludes by Lutoslawski with the Trinity String Ensemble, Domaines by Boulez with the RCM Contemporary Consort and more recently Krommer’s Concerto for Two Clarinets No.2 with the Hong Kong Camerata. He has also collaborated with the Giullami Quartet for performances of the Brahms and Mozart Quintets.
Massimo graduated with distinction from the Royal College of Music where he studied with Michael Collins, Timothy Lines and Robert Hill. He was the prestigious Wilkins-Mackerras Scholar and was also supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, a Martin Musical Fund Scholarship, the Craxton Memorial Trust award, the Musicians Benevolent Fund and a Wingate Scholarship. As a graduate on the Advanced Solo Performance course at Trinity College of Music, where he studied with Joan Enric Lluna and Michael Whight, Massimo graduated with distinction. Whilst there he won the Wilfred Hambleton Clarinet Prize, received the Wilfred Hambleton Award of Achievement and also won the Isabelle Bond Gold Medal, Trinity College’s premier prize. Massimo has also taken part in international masterclasses with eminent clarinettists Charles Neidich, Antony Pay and Hans Deinzer.
